Know Scrap Review: Glitter Glue

My stash.

Spring is in the air, and glitter glue is on my projects. There is something about a change in seasons that brings out the embellisher in me. Glitter glue is a favorite of mine, and I have always wondered if there was really much difference between the expensive, scrapbooking-specific stuff like Stickles and the cheap stuff you find at the dollar store or in the "kiddie craft" aisle. So, I decided to do a head-to-head comparison of several different glitter glues to see if the extra money I spent on my scrapbook-specific glitter glue was really worth it.

I have been using Martha Stewart glitter glue since I caught the glitter glue bug about a year ago. I bought a four-pack of bright metallic colors, and I have used those with great success on my projects. So, for the sake of my test, I added to my supply pretty considerably with a 12-pack of more translucent, pastel shades from Martha Stewart, some Distress Stickles from Ranger, bottles of Studio G glitter glue, a set of glitter glue pens from the Target dollar spot, and a set of Creatology glitter glue pens from the kiddy craft aisle at Michael's. I also dug up some old dollar store glitter glue that I had bought a long time ago, but had never had much success getting out of the bottle in usable form.

I know, I know. I am such a diligent blogger, buying all of that glitter glue just for this test.

The sacrifices I make for my art ;-)

I attempted to devise a test for the performance of the glue by using similar colors from a variety of the glitter glues to create a comparison chart. I also used a representative sample of the glues on different parts of a stamped image. They all really look pretty good in person, but have you ever tried to photograph glitter? Ugh. So for some of this, you might just have to take my word when I describe some of the differences. First, I tested gold- my old standby. The Martha Stewart Florentine Gold (MSFG) is the glue I use most often in my crafting.

This difference I noted right away was the size of the applicator tip. On the MSFG bottle, the tip is very fine, allowing for pinpoint application of the glue. All of the others had wider tips, and they were just much clumsier to use when writing or drawing. To be fair to the Stickles, the pachage did say the Distress Stickles had a wide tip to accommodate the specific antiquing functions they made this kind of glitter glue for. Martha Stewart, Craftology, and Stickles all had bright, full color glitter, with the Martha Stewart and the Stickles having the highest degree of opacity. The dollar store glue, per usual, was a watery mess, and I pretty much had to smear it on the page.

Next, I went for greens. The results were pretty similar- The Martha Stewart product was easiest to apply, followed by the Craftology, with the Studio G being the hardest. All of them had nice color and sparkle once dry, but the Craftology started out looking like glitter suspended in clear liquid.

After that, I went for blues. The Martha Stewart was by far the easiest to apply in both the pastel and the metallic shade. The Target glue almost looked like toothpaste with glitter in it when I put it on- which was kinda cool- but after it dried, it lost that translucent effect and flattened out.

Finally, I tried a stamped image. I outlined the peach in Martha Stewart, colored the leaf in with Studio G, used target on the top writing, and Craftology on the bottom writing.

My final verdict? If you want control, the Martha Stewart is best. Stickles may be great for control with its regular applicator top- I'll have to check that out. The Martha Stewart is also nice and thick without being clotty, so you get nice dimension. The Stickles is a rich, saturated color, and only slightly less thick than the Martha Stewart. The Studio G has good glitter saturation, but is harder to get out of the bottle. The Craftology and Target glues have a little less glitter saturation on application, but dry to a decent saturation. However, they both flatten out considerably when they do. If you are going to do large areas, or smear the glue around once its on the page, any of the cheaper glues would be fine. Well, almost any of them. The dollar store glue was just epic fail, all around. It was clumpy in the bottle, watery on the page, and had low glitter saturation. The only application I found it worthy for was this:

Cost is definitely a factor, too. I got all of my MS glue on sale, but a 12 pack assortment of small vials like the one I have runs about $15 regularly, and the four .5 oz bottle pack around $5- when you can find it. The Stickles usually run around $1.50- $2.00 per .3 oz. bottle, or $4-5 per three pack. Studio G is $1 per bottle. The Craftology glue was $3 per five pen assortment, while the Target pens were cheapest at a four pack for $1. While you get what you pay for, I'm not opposed to using the $1 glue on projects where precision or dimension aren't a factor.

I feel like what I really need to do is get some more glitter glue, so I can try it all again (^-^)

Random Card Roundup/Challenge Me Monday

A card I made for my Secret Sister using some Recollections "Mom's Diner" paper and a stamped image.
A birthday card using K and Co. paper and an Imagine image courtesy of the KC Croppers cut swap.

Two "sweet" cards- top using a KC Croppers cut swap cut from the HK Greetings cart, and the bottom using some Target dollar spot paper.

I was cleaning out my camera's SD card, and came across some pics I had forgotten to post. See- I DO actually make things now and then! HK just happened to work well for the Fantabulous Cricut Challenge Me Monday theme- gentle animals.

Bunnies & Blossoms Banners for Kids Blog Hop - March 24 & 25

Welcome to the
Bunnies and Blossoms Banner Hop
for Special Needs Children.

Today and tomorrow (March 24-25),
30+fantastic papercrafters have come together to create
Spring-themed banners. They will then donate these banners
to Ellen (CardMonkey), who works as Admissions Coordinator
at Pediatric Specialty Care (PSC),
www.pediatricspecialty.com.
PSC is a long-term care facility for special needs children
who are medically-fragile and/or technologically-dependent.
The babies, children and youths at PSC range in age from
birth to 21, and are admitted from all over the country.

Some are infants, born prematurely and before their lungs
have had a chance to mature. Others have serious birth defects,
illnesses or injuries from accidents that cause them to need tender
loving care in a home-like environment -- many for their lifetimes.
Our banners are meant to cheer the young patients,
their families, and the staff at PSC. Here is the banner that I
made and will be sending to Ellen to decorate a child's room:

To create my banner.... I used bunny images (like the ones
below) from vintage greeting cards that I found on the net.

I printed them and cut them out.
Then chalked them for a deeper color.
I pop dotted them to an egg shape.
To create the egg shape background,
I used digi paper from
Pink Pearl Studio on Etsy.
Printed the digi paper out and cut them into egg shapes.
Then using an svg file, I cut some flourish eggs, placed over
the digi paper eggs.  I also chalked the edges of the flourish eggs.
Then I fan folded crepe paper streamers for the final border on each egg.

I also added some embellishments, bows, buttons, and eyelets to each egg.

Here are close up pics.

St. Pat's Follow Up

Well, St. Pat's is behind us, and so is my spring break. I promised myself I would get some major scrapping done, but what I ended up scrapping was... St. Pat's cards. Oh well- something is better than nothing! I used a lot of pot o' gold cuts from Simply Charmed again (love that cart!). I found some cute paper on sale at Michael's for 16 cents, so that was a great help, too!

One thing I did do during break was go to a great scrapbooking "Garage Sale" sponsored by Scrapbook-N-Memories down in Harrisonville, MO. This store is one of those wonderful little home-town scrapstores that used to be everywhere before the economy went bust and the megastores rolled in. I hope we will see a resurgence in stores like this, as I really miss them. I love going in and being able to talk "scrapbook" with the people working there, knowing that they really understand and care for what they are talking about. If you live in the KC metro, go down and visit Scrapbook-N-Memories. It's a great place, and they have a lot of cute, unique papers and products you just won't find on the megastore shelves.

St. Patrick's Luck Day Blog Hop - March 17th & 18th - Day 2

Welcome to our Lucky St. Patrick's Day Blog Hop - Day 2.

May your blessings outnumber
The shamrocks that grow,
And may trouble avoid you
Wherever you go.

You should have arrived here from Michelle's blog... http://craftychelle.blogspot.com/

If you just happened to stumble upon this hop,
please be sure to go back to Angela's blog at
http://creativecraftin.blogspot.com

to start at the beginning.

For my projects today, I created several more cards.

A tri-step card for a dear friend of mine.
I had a very difficult time finding much St. Pat's
paper this year.  But I just love this polka dot paper.

I used an action wobble on the leprechaun below.
The leprechaun is a svg file that my hubby created.
I will post it as a FREE SVG file on Tuesday
win I announce the winner of my blog candy.

Here is the card that my husband made for me.
He used svg files and pop dotted the little shamrocks.
I love receiving his homemade cards.

And here is a card that my dear friend and fellow blogmate
(Kitty) made for me.  She used the Birthday Anya stamp from
The Greeting Farm.  To cover the birthday hat on Anya, she
cut out a little leprechaun hat to place on her head.   Super
creative Kitty!!  I love the Anya stamps so this card is perfect.

Here is another card made by Kitty.  She used one of the
SVG files that my hubby made.  You can find the FREEBIE
at the top of the page or scroll down a little ways to that post.
Kitty and I both had a difficult time finding greens that matched.

I made some goodies for some little friends of mine.

One of my past students came over last night to visit.
He is in 5th grade now.  So it was a lot different than
the Preschoolers that I am used to.  But we performed
several science projects, had a picnic at the park, made
homemade play dough and goop.  The pictures below
are of the GOOP.  If you have never tried this with
your kid(s), you should.  Unless your kid doesn't like to
get messy, he or she will LOVE this.  I have done this
in the past with my preschoolers and it is always a
hit with the little guys and even the big kids love it.
The actual recipe is below.  To find more fun kid friendly
projects, check out my pre -k website at www.prekfun.com

Homemade Goop Recipe
(Makes enough for 1 child.)
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup water
small bowl, tin pie plate, etc.
cookie sheet or pizza pan
more water
Food coloring (if desired)
We added one drop of green to make it the pale green in the pic.

Add the water to the corn starch in a bowl,
tin pie plate, etc. Mix it together using your hands.
If you need to add more water, add just a couple of drops
(especially after playing with it for awhile).

Ask your child questions like:
What does the corn starch smell like?
How does it feel?
What is it doing?

Thanks for stopping by today.

Remember if you leave a comment on both days of this hop
and become a follower, you have a chance of winning some green.
Sorry it's not the green you are probably thinking of nor is it the
gold at the end of the rainbow... but it's a few little green goodies.
I bagged all the little goodies in the pic below into a small green
organza drawbag and will be mailing it out to one LUCKY winner.
I'll draw the LUCKY winner on Tuesday, March 20th.

May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light,
May good luck pursue you each morning and night.
